Steal some catwalk style with our rundown of autumn/winter's hottest trends.

If only there were such a thing as fashion forecasters. That way we wouldn't have been duped into shopping sprees earlier this year, by weather forecasters predicting a 'BBQ Summer'.

marks_and_spencer_limited_collection_shoulder_dress_49.50.jpgNow we're stuck with unworn floaty dresses, redundant gladiator sandals and shorts with tags still attached, and it's time to write off the elusive summer of 2009 and look ahead to the great fashion warm-up.

The autumn/winter fashion season is upon us with threads we're guaranteed to really get wear out of, and as winter weather never fails us, you can splurge away guilt-free.

Want something a little more inspired than woolly jumpers and scarves for your autumnal style leap? Steal your inspiration from the key catwalk trends and seek out the high street's affordable versions.

So long summer and hello to a brand new seasonal wardrobe with staying power.

Shoulder chic
Step back in time but go fashion forward with an Eighties-inspired silhouette as seen at Balmain and Julien Macdonald. Think Dynasty-style shoulder pads that even Joan Collins would be envious of. Whether it's a dress, top or suit jacket, french_connection_poison_ivy_print_dress_90.jpgexaggerated shoulders are 'the' instant way to update your winter look.

Ditch the delicate ditsy numbers and head for this season's statement power prints inspired by Peter Pilotto, Erdem, and Marios Schwab. Not suitable for wallflowers these are prints that pack a loud punch in bold geometric designs and bright colours. Tone them down for winter mode with black tights and dark layers.

Get the look: Evans Galaxy print hooded drape top, £35; French Connection Poison Ivy print dress, £90 Pictured; Monsoon multicoloured print Izzie dress, £65.

Heavy metal
One for the magpies, this eye catching trend is all about bling embellishments. Fierce studs, sparkly top_shop_unique_collection_during_london_fashion_week.jpgsequins and exposed zips are the key details to shine like a rock chick warrior. Make like the catwalk models and create top-to-toe metal impact by going black-on-black and adding lashings of leather.office_suited_and_booted_stud_heels_85.jpg

Get the look: Office Suited and Booted studded heels, £85 Pictured Below; New Look studded shift dress, £75; Debenhams Red Herring embellished mohair jumper, £45.

Military mania
Soldier chic has had its marching orders to return to the fashion front line once again. Military styling was big news on the catwalks at Luella and Paul Smith. Pick from a versatile colour palette of black, navy or khaki with flashes of gold braiding, bold brass buttons or go the whole hog with medal-inspired embellishments.

Get the look: F&F at Tesco red military coat, £45; George at Asda cream military knit top, £14; Accessorize grey Elspeth badge clutch, £22.

Colour shock
Think bright colours are reserved for high summer? The likes of Versace, Blumarine and House of Holland re-wrote the rules. Eye-popping brights are big news for autumn, whether you favour juicy jewel colours like indigo or emerald, or neon shades like tangerine and hot pink. Contrast your look with heavy black accessories to really make a statement.

Get the look: Matalan Papaya purple bow collar coat, £35; ASOS colour block suede skirt, £65; Debenhams Debut hot pink one shoulder dress, £80.

Hound dog
Monochrome made a big impact at Alexander McQueen, Preen and Moschino with bold houndstooth prints. Think graphic, oversized jumbo checks to make a statement in the concrete jungle or look to the more subtle muted micro prints. DKNY and Stella McCartney put a modern twist on the popular check teaming together grey and black.

Get the look: Next houndstooth shift dress, £40; Wallis monochrome dogstooth coat, £90, Dorothy Perkins grey dogstooth top, £18.

Ask the expert
Q: I love it when designers collaborate with high street stores. Is there anything in the pipeline?

A: Whip out those diaries for some designer dates. Topshop houses some of the edgiest capsule collections with limited edition lines from Emma Cook, Preen and Markus Lupfer currently available, but keep your eyes peeled for the hottest designer drop, Christopher Kane, during September.

Marisota is also in on the designer collaboration act with Biba. The 12-piece collection in muted autumnal tones is available now at www.marisota.co.uk in sizes 12-32. Shoe fiends need to wait until November 14 for H&M's eagerly awaited Jimmy Choos. Prepare for a stylish scrum.

Recessionista alert
Mango have done all the groundwork for credit-crunching shoppers with their new Think Up concept. You'll find over 90 pieces among existing collections for as little as £9, with each garment indicated with a special label.

Fashion flash
Mini me
Hemlines are rising and so too is the age for parading our pins. Women's skirts are staying shorter for longer, according to a new survey by Debenhams. Mini skirts measuring in at 14 inches or less are being worn by women right up to their 40th birthdays, store buying trends reveal. Figures from 1980 showed that on average women stopped buying minis when they reached 33. Debenhams' spokesman Ed Watson said: "If this trend continues, there's no doubt that, within the next decade, women in their mid 40s and early 50s will rightly regard a mini skirt as an essential part of their everyday wardrobe."
