Breakdown Cover
It does not matter if you have a new car or an old car they can all let you down when you least expect it and they will, so it is better to be prepared for it when it does and if you are better prepared for the incident then it won’t turn into a crisis.
So first things first is it worth taking out breakdown insurance – well like everything else there are a variety of different covers that you can take out and it worth checking out the small print to find one that best suits you and your budget. There are numerous companies that offer different levels of cover so it’s worth checking out a few. Limit your chances of a breakdown by having your car serviced regularly. Follow this simple check list to reduce your chances of having a problem.
Bodywork: Do not ignore damaged bodywork as rust can set in and cause problems without you noticing until it is too late.
Engine oil: You should check your oil levels every couple of weeks and have the oil and filter changed at the recommended times.
Lights: These should include all lights such as headlights, brake and fog lights and indicators and keep them clean in bad weather.
Power steering: Check once a month and top up if required. Again this should also be done at the service intervals.
Screenwash: By law this must work properly and always ensure that it is topped up with a good Screenwash and don’t use just water as this will not clean the grime away from your windscreen.
Toolkit: Ensure that you know where this is stored in your car. It should contain at the very minimum a jack and wheel removal tools, also check if you have wheel locking nuts as you will need the unlocking nut to remove your wheel in the event of a puncture.
Tyres: Carry out regular checks on your tyres and ensure that you maintain the correct pressure in them every fortnight - don’t forget the spare.
Water: Ensure that the water coolant level is at the correct level, but only do this when the engine is cold and have the antifreeze checked before winter so that it is at the right mixture.
Windscreen: Do keep regular checks for cracks and stone chips, minor chips can be repaired by specialists but large cracks as well as stone chips can grow and eventually crack the screen.
Wipers: These should be replaced once every year.
