Do’s
1.  Always employ a competent and registered gas installer when looking for someone to work on gas
a) for Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the Isles of Man contact Gas Safe Register on Tel 0800 408 5500
b) for Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands contact CORGI on Tel 0800 915 0485

2.  For your own safety, always ensure your gas appliances are serviced at regular intervals. Typically, servicing will be an annual activity, but the manufacturer’s instructions for the appliance concerned will give specific guidance.

3.  Use your gas appliances as intended by the appliance manufacturer – their instructions will provide guidance on operation and use.

4.  For added piece of mind for you and your family, purchase approved Carbon Monoxide alarms which comply with BS EN 50291 and have a BSi Kitemark, and install them in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions –

a) Carbon Monoxide alarms should be installed in every room where a gas appliance is installed
b) Regularly test your Carbon Monoxide alarm as the manufacturer guides you – a test button is provided for this purpose
c) Replace out-of-date alarms for new ones (typical life span of 5 years); batteries used on Carbon Monoxide alarms are normally integral to the alarm and cannot be replaced. Additionally, sensors within the alarm have an operational life span, which shouldn’t be exceeded.
d) Importantly, if a Carbon Monoxide alarm sounds, move your family from the area, open doors and windows as you leave, turn off the gas at your gas meter or bulk storage vessel/bottles (for Liquefied Petroleum Gas installations). Then contact the emergency service provider – listed below.

5. Where faults such as noisy operation, smells, odd coloured gas flames, etc are noticed, contact your local registered installer for advice and guidance – if in doubt, turn off the gas and contact the Emergency Service Provider listed below.

Don’ts
1. Never DIY with gas. No matter how simple a job looks - there can be consequences to your actions, which may put you, your family and your neighbours at risk!

3. Never modify or otherwise alter your gas appliances flue system; equally, don’t place objects or structures close to, or around the flue systems point of termination.
4. If your Carbon Monoxide alarm activates, DO NOT ignore it, or silence it by taking it outside. Failure to act to Carbon Monoxide alarm activation put’s the lives of you and your family in jeopardy!

a) evacuate the area;
b) open doors and windows as you leave;
c) turn-off your gas at the meter or for Liquefied Petroleum Gas installations, the vessel/bottle location; and
d) contact the National Emergency Service Provider – listed below

5. Never box-in or otherwise enclose your gas appliance as this can affect the safe and efficient operation of the appliance concerned – the manufacturer’s instructions will provide additional guidance, or contact your local Gas Safe Registered installer for further advice.
