These days there are a number of cosmetic procedures that can be used to freshen up our smile and in turn improve our general appearance.

A few of the most popular procedures are outlined below:

Tooth Whitening
This is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure.  It is the least invasive procedure available - it is quick, easy and gives a subtle yet satisfying result.

There are two ways in which you can whiten your teeth:
* Home kit - moulds are made of your teeth. Bespoke trays are made that are filled with whitening gel and can be worn overnight or for one hour a day.  This procedure on average takes two weeks to achieve the desired result.

*In House - some people call this Laser whitening.  Procedures such as BRITESMILE or ZOOM.

This is a one-hour procedure where your dentist whitens your teeth giving you immediate results.

Advantages -
*Naturally whiter teeth
*No long term damage if completed correctly
*Suits every complexion
*Healthier, younger looking smile

Disadvantages -
*Not suitable for people with fillings on there front teeth or crowns or veneers as these will not change colour
*There is a limit to how white you can go so teeth will not go white like Ross in Friends (this may be an advantage!)
*There can be some short-term sensitivity whilst carrying out the procedure

This procedure is not permanent. Over the counter kits tend not to work and this procedure is best carried out by a dental professional.

*Home kit prices £200 - £400  *In house prices £300 - £700

Bonding

This can be done without injections, without drilling, without pain.  It involves the addition of a material that looks very much like a tooth to make changes to the shape of the tooth, lengthen a tooth or to close gaps between teeth.

Advantages -
*
Quick
*Painless
*Reversible
*Relatively cheap

Disadvantages -
*
Not permanent
*Needs to be replaced every few years
*Not suitable for people with a grinding habit

**Prices from £50 - £500

Ceramics - Veneers or Crowns

These can be placed over the front surface of teeth or around a tooth to improve existing teeth.

People generally have ceramics to make their teeth much whiter (although this can be a natural white colour if desired), larger, smaller or straighter (when they do not want to wear braces) or to close gaps between teeth.

Advantages -
*Huge improvement in the appearance of teeth and can make dramatic changes when required
*Beautiful results when completed by an experienced dentist
*Ceramics can be cleaned like glass so they do not stain like regular teeth

Disadvantages -
*
This process is irreversible as it involves drilling the teeth to make space for these ceramics
*Ceramics need to be replaced every 10-15 years

**Can be costly - Prices from £500 - £1500 per tooth

Gum Recontouring

This can be done in association with ceramics. The shape of the gum can be changed.  This is done to make the smile more symmetrical or reduce the amount of gum visible on smiling.

Implants

When there is a missing tooth this can be replaced by an implant- a screw in tooth placed in the jaw.

Advantages -  A new single tooth

Disadvantages -This procedure is not suitable for everyone and can be difficult in patients with gum disease, bone loss or smokers.

**Prices from £3000 - £4000 per tooth
