Get In the Pink For Breast Cancer Care
Get in the pink for the month of October
Breast cancer can be a killer. We take our chances on the roll of a dice – but we can drastically reduce our chances of being diagnosed with cancer, or indeed dying from it.
October is Breast Cancer Care month and we want all our readers to get behind the campaign and make lift awareness of breast cancer. Let’s start talking about it – to your mother, sister, daughter or friends.
Nearly 44,600 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year – that’s someone every 12 minutes. That’s a frightening statistic, but we welcome the rise in the number of people being diagnosed as it shows earlier detection is working. What we now want is to see survival rates rise dramatically.
The biggest risk factor, after gender, is age. The older you are the higher the risk - 80% of breast cancer cases occur in women over the age of 50.
More people are being diagnosed with breast cancer, but survival rates are improving. This is probably due to improved treatment and earlier detection through increased breast awareness and the NHS screening service.
Cancer is also riddled with fiction – idle gossip among us women – very often 100% untrue.
We dispel a few myths: * Breast cancer is not mainly a hereditary disease. Breast cancer can run in families, but fewer than 10% of cases are as a result of family history. * Pregnancy does not increase the risk of breast cancer. In fact, the more children a woman has, the lower her risk of getting breast cancer * Deodorants do not cause breast cancer. There is no hard evidence to prove or disprove the myth that they cause breast cancer. Breast Cancer Care has asked Womens Everything readers to get In the Pink to raise money for people affected by breast cancer. Friday 24 October is In the Pink day, but events can be held throughout the month. Why not organise a girls night in with pink food and drink or wear pink to work? Anything goes as long as it’s pink! Getting involved is easy - just register for your free fundraising pack full of tips and ideas at www.breastcancercare.org.uk/inthepink or call 0870 164 9422. Let’s have some fun girls and all plan something for the 24th. Let us know what you are doing and how much money you raise.
This fantastic charity brings together people, provides information and support, and campaigns for improved standards of care.
Let’s work together at Womens Everything to do what we can to make Breast Cancer Care Month a success. We’re waiting to hear about your fun fund-raising events.
