Get the best price for your used car
1) First rule is that looks count. You need the wow factor for potential punters so when they see your car for the first time it gleams.
2) So give your car a good clean or even better get it valeted they usually cost around about £50 - £70.
3) Do your homework on the value of your car and be realistic, check it out with the various publications or on the internet and compare what the market value of your car is.
4) If you have any outstanding finance on your car, then settle this first or try and get permission from the company to allow you to sell the car.
5) Honesty is the best policy, don’t lie about your car take care when wording your advert and describe your car as accurately as possible and highlight the facts that will interest potential buyers such as age of the car, mileage and how many months the MOT has left to run.
6) Paperwork ready, have all your receipts for work carried out if possible, a full service history fully stamped will add value. Have all your car documents ready so they can be inspected.
7) Test Drives - don’t become a victim of car crime, always ensure that they are insured to drive your car first and always go with them. Never leave them in the car alone with the keys even if you are changing seats, take the keys with you and hand them over when you are sitting in the passenger seat.
8) Give a little, by giving a little when you haggle this will make the buyer feel that he has got something extra from you and you win by getting close to your asking price.
9) Write up a sellers contract to protect yourself, include the details of the car such as registration, make and colour, the amount you have sold it for and that it was sold as seen, there are sellers contracts on the internet that you can downloaded. Make two copies one for you and one for the buyer, they should both be signed and dated by both parties and make sure you keep a signed copy. You then need to inform the DVLA.
10) Finally, but most importantly make sure that you get paid and do not let your car go until you are 100% happy that you have been paid in full, cash is the best way but make sure that you can pay it straight in to the bank. Do not let it lie around your house over a bank holiday weekend as it is not unusual for them to come back and rob you. If you are given a cheque or bakers draft wait until it has cleared first before releasing the keys.
