Swap a tablespoon of mayonnaise for salsa and you’ll save a whopping 96 calories, tzatziki 84 calories, guacamole 76 calories and sour cream and chive 56 calories. On top of cutting calories you have the added benefit that the avocado in guacamole is a great source of vitamin E, while the tomatoes, onions and chillies in salsa are a great provider of antioxidants such as lycopene (which give tomatoes their red colour) and quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant.
Also did you know that Greek yoghurt in tzatziki also contains bone friendly calcium and almost all fresh dips contain vegetable, rapeseed or olive oils meaning they are high in beneficial unsaturated fats and light on unhealthy saturated fats.
Fresh dips such as guacamole, salsa and tzatziki are a great way to add some pizzazz to your sarnie. They can also help you cut calories when swapped for butter or margarine and are a great way to use up leftovers to save some extra cash.
So when entertaining, instead of serving up all your dips, keep a little back in the fridge for the next day’s packed lunch. They’ll be the perfect partner to the Sunday roast left-over’s.
