Jenny Tinmouth - Britain's Top Female Motorbike Racer

jenny_tinmouth1.jpgToday I talked to glamorous Jenny Tinmouth about Superbikes about how she became a women determined to fight her way to the top in this male -dominated sport aiming to be Britain's Fastest Female.

One of the only women to have made it into this very competitive arena she starts to tell me all about her journey and as she starts to speak I can see the passion that drives her on in this tough sport.  Well says Jenny “there are 7 classes in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship and I’m in the 2nd from top class which  involves riding a 600cc bike in the British 125gp Championship there are13 rounds spread over 8 months all over the UK. We race as far away as Knockhill in Fife, Scotland, down to Brands Hatch in Kent and even Mondello Park in Ireland.

Q - So Jenny how did you get involved?

Jenny - “I’d watch my older cousin riding a beat up old classic TVR – he’d compete against the best and although I wanted to do it at about 16/17 it wasn’t until I was about 21 that I started to race seriously” says Jenny “.

- So what’s it like to race against the boys?

Jenny – “It was a great advantage to begin with as they all thought I’d be no good, but once I started winning and ranking well it’s changed and they now treat me with a lot of respect – they now come up to me at the end of a race and shake my hand and say things like “great performance” which is really satisfying.”

– Have you ever felt like giving up?

Jenny – “Definitely when I had no money – at one point I’d lost my job because my employers didn’t like the idea of me racing, they felt it affected my work, even though I made sure it didn’t, so it was really hard trying to carry on racing when I had no resources – but I was just determined to carry on.  So I decided to set up my own company repairing motorbikes so I could be in charge of my own destiny”.

– So how much does it cost to take part in Superbiking at your level?

Jenny – “It costs around £60,000 per year, my dream is to move up to the next class but it costs £120,000 per year it’s really hard chasing sponsorship.  I know I could do really well at the next level, unfortunately it’s not about ability it’s about having the right sponsors on board – I’d just love to have a go.”

– Are your family supportive?

Jenny – “Mum loves it - she had a bike herself so has a love for the sport too– I think Dad’s a bit worried sometimes I might hurt myself”.

– What next?

Jenny – “I’ve been asked to ride in the TT 2009 in the Isle of Man next year which I’m really excited about, especially being the only woman.”
