Keep Safe When You Travel
We’ve all been there – you’ve scanned the holiday brochures and trawled through the internet before deciding on your next break. Excitedly, you tell friends and family about your new adventure - but will you be safe? This just doesn't just affect those of you who holiday for pleasure, but with the growing number of you who now travel for a living.
Safety is a huge question for women travellers. Perhaps we are seen as easy targets for the conman in the bazaar. Women on their own, or in pairs, are particularly at risk.
We at Womens Everything love to travel and enjoy nothing better than an excuse to race off to the airport or enjoy a girlie weekend at a spa. But now more than ever us girlies need to to be aware. We've put together some simple tips, to help you stay safe and enjoy your holiday/trip.
We love the website safetravel4women.com which includes a web directory of female friendly hotels, plus travel tips and even a section on how to find fellow travellers.
Thankfully, many hotels in Britain are becoming more aware of women’s security needs. Many hotels offer discreet check-in for women and avoid giving them ground floor rooms. We were impressed with Macdonald Hotels’ “lady resident” parking spaces near the hotel entrance.
Hotel booking website, www.expotel.com/programmes.asp should be applauded for setting up the “Woman Aware” campaign. Expotel surveyed female travellers to evaluate exactly what they wanted out of a hotel. Hotels must satisfy 10 criteria to achieve “Woman Aware” status. Well done we say!
Also as I mentioned above business women must also be aware of the dangers of travelling alone, especially if the trip involves corporate hospitality. The barriers of business can be broken and you need to remember that business colleagues are not friends!.
Here are our tips to keep you safe:
* Research your holiday venue, including the location or your accommodation.
* Be organised, so you know exactly where your passport and tickets are at the airport.
* Make sure your hotel knows when you are expected to arrive.
* Let a friend or relative know you have arrived at your destination.
* Be aware of local customs and dress accordingly.
* Carry a rape alarm and don't be afraid to scream or SHOUT.
* Never accept a drink from a stranger and never leave your drink unattended.
* Don’t flaunt too much jewellery. Leave the Cartier at home and wear your Swatch.
* Choose your handbag carefully and wear it close to your body.
* When you go out tell the hotel receptionist where you are going.
* Avoid dinking too much alcohol and drawing attention to yourself.
* Keep your wits about you in conversation with strangers.
* Photocopy important documents and keep them separate from the originals.
* Keep some loose change in your pocket – avoid hunting around for your purse when tipping.
* Check the hotel room has a double lock – so hotel staff can’t access your room.
* Don’t give money to street beggars.
* Be extremely vigilant in car parks.
* Finally be aware and trust your gut instinct.
Have a great holiday!
