Luxury Hotels on a Budget

As travel purse strings tighten, luxury budget hotels are THE place to stay

According to the Future of Independent Travel report commissioned by STA Travel, luxury budget hotels, or ‘lotels’ will be this year’s biggest travel trend.

Just as budget airlines revolutionised air travel by ‘de-bundling’ services – providing the basics of in-flight necessities for an accessible price with all extras sold at a premium – so the new luxury budget hotels are doing the same.

These new hospitality spaces – including the Big Sleep, easyDorm and base2stay chains in the UK; citizenM in Amsterdam; and the first zero-star hotel, Null Stern in St Gallen, Switzerland – provide a good bed and bathroom, a modern, characterful environment and a convenient city-centre location.  According to Mintel estimates, budget hotel capacity in the UK will see a 50% jump by 2012, outstripping non-budget hotel growth by four times.

‘The development of the ‘luxury budget’ hotel is a trend that is further driving travel for this generation,’ says Daniel Charbonnier, director of hospitality industry consultancy Minds in Motion. ‘It fits in with these travellers’ need for travel to be more experiential and practical, rather than associated with luxury as it has been for decades now.’
