Microchip Your Dog
100,000 Dogs Dumped As Recession Bites
Shocking facts revealed this week by the Dogs Trust 2009 that a staggering 107,228 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities from UK streets in the last year. This represents an unacceptable increase of 11% and is the highest increase recorded since records began in 1997.
Dogs Trust fears the combination of the current financial crisis and 2008’s change in stray dog law in England and Wales may explain this sudden increase.
So why not protect you dog in case he gets lost. A microchip is a small electronic device the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is implanted under the dog's skin between the shoulder blades. Each microchip has a unique number and can be easily read by a scanner. Most veterinary practices in the UK can microchip your dog, for about £20 - £30 along with a growing number of local authorities and animal welfare groups. Dogs Trust currently provides a reduced price microchipping service at our Rehoming Centres– please contact directly them directly.
The Authorities and animal welfare groups use scanners to check stray dogs to see if they have been microchipped. If the dog has been microchipped he can then be returned to the owner easily and quickly.
If an animal is found to have a microchip, the Local Authority, Vet or animal welfare organisation contacts a national database to find the owner's details. The owner then can be contacted and reunited with their dog.
