Rosemary Conley’s Top Tips for Getting Slim, Fit and Healthy
Right now, money may be a top priority, but getting slim, fit and healthy is the best investment to make for 2010 and beyond.
At this time of economic gloom, you could be forgiven for thinking that losing your excess pounds and getting fitter was not a top priority. But, think again.
If you’re overweight, getting slimmer and fitter will not only improve your health, it will also make you feel a whole lot better about yourself and change your outlook on life. Exercise releases endorphins, called happy hormones, and lifts our mood. If we are in a good mood, people will respond to us more positively and we can achieve more in every aspect of our daily lives.
This time last year, we probably couldn't imagine that, faced with greater financial pressures, we would have to tighten our belts and make sacrifices.
But if it makes us think twice about the amount of food we buy, encourages us to cut down on waste, to ditch the car for non-essential journeys and walk more to save fuel, that¹s no bad thing. Not only will we be doing our bit for the planet, we’ll be burning extra calories too!
After the Second World War, food was precious and every morsel was appreciated. My mother only bought the exact amount of food the family needed and my father grew vegetables in the garden. If there were vegetables left over from the previous day’s meals, they’d be mashed up and fried to make ‘bubble and squeak’ and served with cold meat the next day.
So let’s get a sense of perspective and not waste any opportunity to get fitter and healthier:
TOP TIPS:
1 PLAN MEALS IN ADVANCE- Make a shopping list and stick to it.
2 CUT THE COSTS - Don’t overestimate the amount of food needed at each meal time. Consider buying less meat and more vegetables as fillers.
3 CHECK FOOD LABELS - Only buy foods low in fat (max 5% fat) and check the calories per portion.
4 RESIST ‘BUY-ONE-GET-ONE-FREE’ OFFERS- in the supermarket unless they are for non-perishable foods that will last.
5 GET COOKING - Avoid the temptation to buy ready-meals. It’s cheaper to make your own.
6 SAVE POWER - If you’re roasting a joint in the oven, cook a casserole or dry-roast potatoes or parsnips at the same time.
7 FREEZE LEFTOVERS - in single portions so you have your own ‘ready-meals’ when you need something quick for one person.
8 FIND SUPPORT - For less than the price of a double gin and tonic and a packet of peanuts, you can go along to a Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Club class. You only pay the same price as you would at a slimming club, but you get a workout into the bargain! Attending classes and sharing weight-loss experiences is proven to be the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off, and at our classes you’ll get the personal touch.
9 REVAMP YOUR WARDROBE - Revisit some of those clothes you’ve not worn for a while. These days, it’s ‘cool’ to boast about how little you’ve spent on your outfit. Follow style gurus Trinny and Susannah’s advice and search in your wardrobe for an old cocktail dress and wear it over a shirt to the office. You get the idea.
10 GET MOVING - Think of ways to be more active in your daily life by walking more, using the stairs rather than the lift, and parking in the furthest space from the supermarket or office. For more formal exercise, work out to a fitness DVD or to a Nintendo Wii Fit if your budget allows. Take up a new sport or an active hobby.
