Interview with Ruby Hammer - International Make-Up Artist

ruby_hammer_image.jpg Ruby Hammer is not only an internationally acclaimed make up artist but is one of the founders behind the hugely successful beauty brand Ruby and Millie.  She’s travelled the world working on catwalk collections and fashion and beauty shoots as well creating looks for the world’s top photographers and some of the most influential designers.  Ruby has also worked on photo shoots for magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Red, Harpers and Queen and Marie Claire.

She is a regular contributor to television shows, such as Channel 4’s 10 Years Younger and BBC Style Challenge.

Q -What was your background? - What made you decide to become a make-up artist?

Ruby - I left university with an Economics degree but have always had a passion for make up.  I used to watch my mum putting on her make up when I was younger and was always fascinated but didn't think of it as something you could earn a living from.

After I left university I had a chance meeting with a make up artist who needed help at Fashion Week so I went along to help her out and ended up assisting her for a year.  That was my apprenticeship really and my career developed from there.

Q - Was it hard to make it in the beauty industry?

Ruby - Yes it was hard, it always was and still is a very competitive industry although at the time it was the 80s and we were at the forefront of the industry.  At the time it was all about putting in very long hours, juggling home and work life, coping without much money and just plugging away - I loved it though.
Q - What was your biggest break?

Ruby - Probably working on British Elle.  I started off doing a reader make over and then went on to do editorial trips where I worked with great photographers and great teams.

Q - You teamed up with Millie Kendall to launch your makeup range Ruby & Millie - can you tell me about this and was it difficult to launch it a new brand against the major players?

Ruby - I had worked with Millie for years already launching brands like Aveda, Mister Mascara and Tweezerman into the UK.  Our make up launch was the culmination of us working together and was the first personality lead make up brand launch in the UK since Mary Quant in the 60s.  It was really hard and took lots of work but we really believed in what we were doing so just went for it.

Q - What advice would you give to other women who would like to follow this career direction as a make up artist - is it as glamorous as it appears?

Ruby - Being a make up artist can be glamorous - working with celebrities and travelling to amazing locations but it certainly isn't like that all the time.  The hours can be long and you're often the first person people on the shoot and the last to leave.  Anyone wanting to get into the industry needs  to have a great eye for colour, good people skills and discipline.  You need to see the trappings such as the travel and working with famous people as secondary to the work itself.

Q - Do you have a role model/s? If you do who are they?

Ruby - I feel lucky that my two role models are actually people I know very well - my mum and Millie Kendall.  My mum has always been a great example to me, she's feminine but still strong and has always been around to guide me and advise me.  Millie and I inspire each other and she is a fantastic sounding board.  I really value and trust her opinion in both work and personal life.

Q - Is your partner supportive? How do you juggle life with your children?

Ruby - My partner is very, very supportive and totally understands the industry I work in.  It would be a real uphill struggle working the long hours I do without his support.  Sometimes life feels like spinning lots of plates and you do what you can to keep them all going.  I think modern life for a women is about juggling and we’ve become pretty good at it.

Ruby - My daughter is now 22 so I am out of the phase of having to juggle school runs and her social life!

Q - What is your proudest moment?

Ruby - My proudest moment was being awarded an MBE in 2007 for my contribution to the cosmetics industry – it really was a fantastic moment.

Q- What do you enjoy most?

Ruby - The simple things in life like a good movie or book, travelling to beautiful places and spending time with loved ones.  Living life as best I can and doing my best makes me happy.

Q - Are you still ambitions?

Ruby - Yes definitely, that hasn’t gone away yet, although with age it is more about balance.

Q - What next?

I still have lots in the pipeline that I don’t want to jinx by talking about just yet, but watch this space!
