Current situation
39 years for women
44 years for men
Voluntary contributions or Class 3 National Insurance contributions can be made up back to 1996.  This is restricted to nine years which must be claimed within six years
A claim may be made for children under 16 or a sick or disabled person, but 20 years' in work are still needed to qualify for the full basic State Pension
Situation in 2009
Contributions can be made up for maximum of the six previous years
Situation from 6 April 2010
30 years for both women and men
The Home Responsibilities Protection system will be replaced by a system of credits for parents and carers hat will count towards State Pension entitlement
