Holidays can be the most relaxing and rewarding time ever, but they can go horribly wrong, so before you part with any cash here are a few essential tips to help protect you. Firstly and most importantly you need to know if your travel agent or tour operator has sufficient funds in place in case of the need for repatriation or in the event of insolvency you can do this by checking to see if they are registered with one of the following bodies:
- Holds the Air Travel Organisers Licence ATOL
- Is bonded with an approved body such as ABTA, ABTOT, AITO, BCH
- Or they hold consumer pre-payments in a trust account such as the TTA
- Adequate Holiday Insurance and if you’ve decided to book a DIY holiday it’s much more important to ensure that your travel insurance will provide cover in event of insolvency
- Book all holidays with your credit card this will offer a small amount of protection (see individual credit cards details for their level of cover)

Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust - ABTOT Hold bonds on behalf of travel organisers, in order to provide financial protection for customer prepayments. They are approved by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Association of British Travel Agents - ABTA Provide financial protection for their customers. This enables you to book your holiday with peace of mind in the knowledge that if your tour operator or travel agent has financial difficulties your holiday will be covered.
Association of Independent Tour Operators - AITO AITO has its own DTI-approved bonding scheme that requires its member companies to protect the money of its customers resident in the UK.
ATOL - Civil Aviation Authority Managed by the CAA (Civil aviation Authority), ATOL offers a protection scheme that covers flights and air holidays. It is the only scheme for flights and air holidays sold by tour operators in the UK.

Bonded Coach Holidays - BCH
