Your Skin in the Winter
by Indy Rihal, British Skin Foundation
Your skin is the largest and most neglected organ of your body has. Yet it receives much abuse, particularly from the elements, like the weather. The winter season can play havoc with your skin, so you need to ensure that you take care of it. Many people, however, aren’t aware of the issues regarding taking care of your skin, not just in the winter, but all year round. The British Skin Foundation’s Respect Your Skin campaign is set to raise awareness on specific skin-health topics in 2008. January is dedicated to looking after your skin.
In the winter season, harsh winds and drops in temperature can strip away your skin’s moisture, which can leave your skin dry and chapped. Moisturise your body daily to keep your skin from drying out and remember that cheap moisturisers are as effective as expensive products.
Keeping wrapped up warm when you’re outside in the winter months is great at protecting your skin from the elements, but the face is harder to cover up. So, moisturise your face and wear lip slave to protect your lips. If you get caught in the rain, try not to keep wet clothes on for longer than necessary. Damp clothing can harm the skin’s natural barrier function, leaving it chaffed, sore and red.
Even if you are tired and tipsy after a long night of partying, make sure that you remove your make up before going to bed. Leaving make up on is harmful to the skin by becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and acne. It really can give you spots, so keep those make up removers at the ready! If you already suffer from a skin condition, like eczema or rosacea, the winter weather can exacerbate it, so take extra care.
